I came across a quote today by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich that stated this “Well behaved women seldom make history” and it got me thinking of the all women I look up to in the media as well as in my own life.
All the women that I admire did not get there by playing it safe; they took risks, asked for what they wanted, they did not wait in the side lines for an invitation, they weren’t afraid to say “no” to what is not serving them and “yes” to their dreams, and most importantly they were not afraid of ruffling a few feathers along the way because it meant that they were honoring themselves. I mean, even Oprah has probably pissed off a few people and that woman is practically a freaking saint!
I’m not saying that you need to become a complete badass by leaving your family for some guy named Rick that rides a Harley or start partying like you’re 20 years old again but it’s time you say goodbye to the “good girl” persona. The woman in you that knows you are playing small is screaming at you to let it go, she is begging you to start living up to your true potential!
5 Keys to Living Your True Potential:
Stop asking permission
This is your life not anyone else’s, if you have dream go for it, if you have a goal start taking the steps to achieve it. You do not need anyone’s permission to go for what you want in life.
Sorry not sorry
Why are you apologizing for every little thing that you do? By all means, if you were an asshole apologize but do NOT apologize for: being yourself, asserting yourself, setting a boundary, saying no, or when something was out of your control.
Stop being a people pleaser
Are you making every choice in your life based on what would please others most? This is a simple statement but words to live by: “If you spend your life pleasing others, you spend your life”.
It’s time to rock the freaking boat!
You have sat on the sidelines for far too long being “nice” and it’s time to stand up for yourself, set boundaries, and assert yourself when your rights and values are being violated.
Stop playing small to make others feel comfortable
Do not downplay your accomplishments, learn to take a compliment, and if you’ve got it flaunt it!
I hope that you see the value in yourself and rise! I believe you can live up to your true potential!
All the best,
